recent email

Hi all,

the next meeting will be on the 6th of May at Port Melbourne :) .........bring something for the Pop-swap (that Louis pitched at the last meeting!) So for people who weren't there, the idea is to bring along to the meeting something (could be a book, film, article, image, whatever really) that has been/is important or inspiring or instrumental in their life, practice, development etc....and we put them all in the middle of the room and each person takes someone else's thing to read, watch, spend time with. We will name them all so that everyone gets theirs back, but it's important that everyone who wants to partake brings something so that we have enough for everyone!

So remember to bring something and we'll do that! :)

Some other things, Craig and I were agreeing that having music in the space last Thursday was really great, that it created a whole different vibe, and that it really altered the way people engaged with the materials we were creating from for the better!....this goes for the guitar playing, and the improvised instrumentals that came later in the night :) if people wanted to bring along stuff to make music with (could be formal instruments or just things that could potentially make sound or music!!!!) this could be fun!!!!! I'm gonna bring my Clarinet for example!.....so yeah, bring whatever and let's jam!

On this note, I've forgotten who (maybe Louis????) had the idea that we could do a performance of the sort that occurred at the meeting last time at Remedy! What do people think?.....for anyone not from VCA, Remedy is a performance night that the Painting Department puts on each semester where students have the opportunity to perform. From music, to sound, to different varieties of Performance Art, Remedy is a platform for our performance ideas and dreams to be realized in a supportive and open environment!.....we do not have the date of this semesters yet, but I will get onto John (who runs it) and forward you all the details asap. We were thinking we could even bring up some materials like last week and make stuf on stage. If people are interested in this, let me know and we can toss around some ideas :) I for one am really keen!

Just a few more things I swear....

The Painting department's show is coming up (opening night is the 3rd of May which is the Tuesday after the break)....it's gonna be REAL fun and features only PAINTING, champagne, AND a live jazz quartet!!!! :) so come along to the Student Gallery at 5pm. Oh and it's a black tie event!

A group of us are going to Heide this coming Wednesday (the 27th) meeting at Heidelberg Station at 11am, we're gonna have a picnic so bring food! It's gonna be 23% YAY! I've texted some people already, but the more the merrier :) so spread the word!

Ok, I think that is finally it. I might post this email on the blog too, so people can respond with ideas, thoughts, etc....

I'll email you all soon about more stuf to do with the next meeting.

Georgie xx

Hello folks...

Just following up on a few things from this Thurday's meeting :-)

The article I mentioned about an amateur attitude to art making is by Simon Leys in The Angel & The Octopus. It is called An Amateur Artist: Fairweather in Chinese perspective. I tried to work out how to upload the .pdf but no joy. It is definitely worth hunting down.

The other thing I wanted to mention was the idea for a Silent Response to people's work. The idea would be to respond to someone's work silently by writing down any feelings / criticism / ideas that the work produces for you. This feedback would be given to the artist at the end of the session. The responses remain anonymous and are intended to help the artist see their practice through the eyes of another. It's also an opportunity to respond to someone's work without having to talk (and in that sense it is freer) and an opportunity to engage with someone's work in silence. It would also be a good way to develop a way of writing if that's what you're interested in. The idea is open... everything from criticism to poetry is valid and obviously if you're partaking in giving the feedback, there'd be an opportunity to receive feedback as well.

If you're interested come an talk to me and we can arrange an initial session in someone's studio!

Oh and there was that idea by Deleuze about being the artist being the first audience member of their work... that the artist calls an audience into being.

The quote I was thinking of is:

"for, if the people are missing, if they are breaking up into minorities, it is I who am the first of all a people, the people of my atoms"

Simon O'Sullivan has written an article called Notes Towards a Minor Art Practice based on Deleuze's Kafka: Towards a Minor Literature.

Here's the link www.simonosullivan.net/articles/minor-literature.pdf

Deleuze's definition of majority/minority in interesting:

‘the difference between minorities and majorities isn’t their size. A minority may be bigger than a majority. What defines majority is a model you have to conform to ... A minority, on the other hand, has no model, it’s a becoming, a process’

Stephen Zepke has also written some good stuff on Deleuze and Art and there's a few of his books in the library... there's a new book that's just been ordered called Deleuze and Contemporary Art.

Ok that's it for me! Have a great couple of weeks :-)

Now Ve Are Young Artistes, Darlinks!

Hello my Friends

Congrats on getting the blog and the co-operative up and running, and for allowing those of us who are not so young, but are definitely young-at-heart to join in. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I'm so excited by this group. You are all so talented and enthusiastic and warm and welcoming, it is a privilege to be part of it. Afterall, the Situationists, the Dadaists, the Viennese Aktionists, DAMP, they all must've started out in a group like ours. Yay, yay, YEAH!!!

May I add just one wee little beastie thing. My heart sank a smidgen when I saw the letters 'INC' after our name. Maybe I'm being a little too sensitive, but having worked in the corporate system and my spirit having died a thousand deaths whilst doing so, I felt a bit depressed. I'm sure you know that an organisation incorporates into a company and takes on the suffix 'inc' purely to announce to the world that they are now operating to make a profit ie. are happy to exploit the weak and vulnerable 'losers' of this world, in order to become 'winners'. Seems so far removed from our lovely collective of people who care muchly about each other, the community and the joyful nature of being involved in doing creative things together. Not saying that we can't make a living from our art, but surely that isn't the reason why our collective wants to exist? Tell me if you think I am taking it all too seriously. Maybe you were being ironic. Hey, why not INK instead of INC? It's a bit more obviously ironic and also relates to that wonderful artistic practice of mark-making. Any thoughts friends?
