next YA meeting :)
I think I just sent an old email so please disregard it. Sorry for any confusion.
This week YA will be meeting on Friday 17th at 5pm in Inez's studio again (is that ok Inez?) I think this works well as everyone will be finished assessment.
We can talk more about Gui's idea, and we thought that it might be nice to do a few trust exercises so that we can create a space where people feel like they can be open with each other (perhaps an important starting point to this exciting project).
Another thing I've been meaning to say is that as it stands I have a list of about 60 people that I email. Obviously not all of the 60 come to meetings, and it can get a bit unmanageable at times so I'm going to cut down the list to the people that have actually been coming to meetings, unless people expressly want to be notified. So, please email me and tell me if you still want to be on the list otherwise I will only keep the people who have been coming. It's time to get serious :)
Perhaps on Friday we can also talk about different possible ways of structuring YA organizationally, creatively, etc.... I had a tute with Lisa Radford a couple of weeks ago to talk about YA/DAMP/Collectives generally and she had some really great advice on how to run/ keep the momentum going with these things....she also gave me a lot of great books/shows to look at that look at Collectives and Collaborative practise, so I will post these on the blog. So yeah, maybe we can discuss these things.
So Friday 17th 5pm, Inez's studio..... See you all then if not before :) xx

this week's meeting :)
so we are going to meet this Thursday (the 2nd of June).... Nic is having a show at Art Beat and it's opening that night at 6pm (is that right Nic?) so I was thinking it would be a good idea if we me at 5pm and then went to Nic's, what do people think?
We have decided to meet in Inez's Honours studio (the Von Gerrard space VCA Artschool) as we have been having some teething problems the las few weeks with meeting up. So hopefully that will be easier.
For anyone who hasn't done their popswap, bring that along and there are still a few ideas for projects that people what to air :)
I will post Gui's dvd on the blog, so check that out when you canh and we will discuss it more when we meet!
Also, a reminder..... Remedy is on this week, Wednesday 5pm..... Come along to the Margaret Lawrence Gallery for a great night of performance!!!!...if anyone wants to perform who hasn't yet ligned it up with me, tere's stll time so yell out :)

Just following up on a few things from this Thurday's meeting :-)
The article I mentioned about an amateur attitude to art making is by Simon Leys in The Angel & The Octopus. It is called An Amateur Artist: Fairweather in Chinese perspective. I tried to work out how to upload the .pdf but no joy. It is definitely worth hunting down.
The other thing I wanted to mention was the idea for a Silent Response to people's work. The idea would be to respond to someone's work silently by writing down any feelings / criticism / ideas that the work produces for you. This feedback would be given to the artist at the end of the session. The responses remain anonymous and are intended to help the artist see their practice through the eyes of another. It's also an opportunity to respond to someone's work without having to talk (and in that sense it is freer) and an opportunity to engage with someone's work in silence. It would also be a good way to develop a way of writing if that's what you're interested in. The idea is open... everything from criticism to poetry is valid and obviously if you're partaking in giving the feedback, there'd be an opportunity to receive feedback as well.
If you're interested come an talk to me and we can arrange an initial session in someone's studio!
Oh and there was that idea by Deleuze about being the artist being the first audience member of their work... that the artist calls an audience into being.
The quote I was thinking of is:
"for, if the people are missing, if they are breaking up into minorities, it is I who am the first of all a people, the people of my atoms"
Simon O'Sullivan has written an article called Notes Towards a Minor Art Practice based on Deleuze's Kafka: Towards a Minor Literature.
Here's the link www.simonosullivan.net/articles/minor-literature.pdf
Deleuze's definition of majority/minority in interesting:
‘the difference between minorities and majorities isn’t their size. A minority may be bigger than a majority. What defines majority is a model you have to conform to ... A minority, on the other hand, has no model, it’s a becoming, a process’
Stephen Zepke has also written some good stuff on Deleuze and Art and there's a few of his books in the library... there's a new book that's just been ordered called Deleuze and Contemporary Art.
Ok that's it for me! Have a great couple of weeks :-)

Now Ve Are Young Artistes, Darlinks!
Congrats on getting the blog and the co-operative up and running, and for allowing those of us who are not so young, but are definitely young-at-heart to join in. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I'm so excited by this group. You are all so talented and enthusiastic and warm and welcoming, it is a privilege to be part of it. Afterall, the Situationists, the Dadaists, the Viennese Aktionists, DAMP, they all must've started out in a group like ours. Yay, yay, YEAH!!!
May I add just one wee little beastie thing. My heart sank a smidgen when I saw the letters 'INC' after our name. Maybe I'm being a little too sensitive, but having worked in the corporate system and my spirit having died a thousand deaths whilst doing so, I felt a bit depressed. I'm sure you know that an organisation incorporates into a company and takes on the suffix 'inc' purely to announce to the world that they are now operating to make a profit ie. are happy to exploit the weak and vulnerable 'losers' of this world, in order to become 'winners'. Seems so far removed from our lovely collective of people who care muchly about each other, the community and the joyful nature of being involved in doing creative things together. Not saying that we can't make a living from our art, but surely that isn't the reason why our collective wants to exist? Tell me if you think I am taking it all too seriously. Maybe you were being ironic. Hey, why not INK instead of INC? It's a bit more obviously ironic and also relates to that wonderful artistic practice of mark-making. Any thoughts friends?
